Cockroach Labs is pleased to announce we have achieved the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Generative AI Competency, an official designation that recognizes AWS Partners with proven expertise and demonstrated customer success in delivering generative AI solutions using AWS technologies.

More than a credential, this validates the infrastructure work our customers are doing today: deploying always-on, agent-driven applications at global scale is working. It also reflects the depth of our collaboration with AWS in helping enterprises build AI applications that are resilient, secure, and production-ready from day one.

Generative AI infrastructure refers to the systems that support always-on AI applications, including data storage, transaction processing, and real-time context retrieval. For enterprises deploying AI agents at scale, this infrastructure must deliver consistent, low-latency data across regions while maintaining high availability under continuous load.

    Why this matters nowCopy Icon

AI has moved faster than most enterprise infrastructure was built to handle. According to our State of AI Infrastructure 2026 report, 83% of global technology leaders expect AI-driven scale to push their infrastructure to failure within the next two years.

The challenge isn't building AI models, it's building the foundation underneath them. Most organizations today are running AI agents on top of fragmented data stacks: one system for transactional records, another for vector embeddings, another for analytics, all duct-taped together. When humans were driving decisions, that was manageable. When machines are making thousands of decisions per second, inconsistent or stale data becomes a critical risk.

That’s where the role of the database fundamentally changes. A database for AI agents is no longer just a system of record: It becomes the source of truth for the data that drives agent decisions, memory, and coordination. When that foundation is fragmented, organizations risk degraded model performance, unreliable automation, and increased operational overhead.

CockroachDB addresses this directly by giving enterprises a unified generative AI infrastructure layer where transactional data, vector context, and agent state coexist and stay in sync. Instead of stitching together multiple systems, teams can operate from a single, consistent data platform to reduce architectural complexity while improving application reliability and time to production.

Achieving the AWS Generative AI Competency validates CockroachDB's ability to power the most demanding GenAI workloads. In practice, this means supporting core requirements like persistent memory for AI agents, real-time state management, and consistent data access across distributed environments. These capabilities are critical for scaling from isolated AI use cases to fully autonomous, multi-agent systems, including:

    • Agent-scale from day one — support agent-driven applications from first agent to fleet, without re-architecting as workloads grow

    • Unified operational and vector workloads — serve as both system of record and agent memory layer in a single system, eliminating the need to stitch together separate databases

    • Native AWS integration — deep integration with Amazon Bedrock, including native vector search with pgvector

    • Enterprise-grade governance — scoped access, auditability, and identity integration purpose-built for agent interactions

    • 99.999% availability — global resilience that keeps agent-driven systems running continuously across regions, even through infrastructure failures

    • Consistency under always-on load — so agents always act on reliable, up-to-date data, not stale reads from a fragmented stack

CockroachDB also supports emerging agentic development patterns, including integration with Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, a purpose-built CLI, and reusable agent skills for common database operations. Together, these capabilities enable AI agents to interact directly with CockroachDB during execution: retrieving context, persisting state, and coordinating workflows in real time. This gives teams a consistent, production-ready data layer for building and scaling agent-driven applications.

Built for always-on AI systems and agent-driven workloadsTraditional databases were designed for recovery after failure. AI-driven systems need infrastructure that sustains continuous success: available at all times, elastic as demand spikes, and consistent under the high-concurrency conditions that agent fleets create.

This shift is driving demand for a new class of AI infrastructure platform that can handle continuous, machine-driven workloads without downtime or data inconsistency. For enterprises this translates directly to higher system reliability, faster decision-making, and the ability to scale AI-driven operations without replatforming.

CockroachDB’s core architecture of global distribution, strong consistency, and automatic failover is exactly what agentic systems require. It wasn’t retrofitted for AI; it was built to solve the same underlying challenges – continuous availability, data consistency under load, and elastic scale – that AI now demands.

"AI has moved beyond experimentation and is becoming an always-on infrastructure," said Cassie Zimmerman, Sr. Director, Global Strategic Partnerships, Cockroach Labs. "This competency validates what our customers are already experiencing: to succeed with generative AI, you need a data foundation that can handle continuous, machine-driven scale without breaking."

Expanding the Cockroach Labs and AWS partnership for generative AI deepens our existing collaboration with AWS, enabling expanded co-selling, joint go-to-market initiatives, and tighter alignment with services like Amazon Bedrock. Together, Cockroach Labs and AWS enable enterprises to build and scale generative AI on AWS with a resilient, globally distributed data foundation – reducing complexity while improving reliability. It builds on our AWS Financial Services Competency and our commitment to meeting enterprise customers where they build.

Customers like Automation Anywhere and Cisco AI are already running mission-critical workloads on CockroachDB. This designation expands our reach through the AWS Partner Network, giving more enterprises a trusted path to production-ready AI infrastructure.

We'll be showcasing CockroachDB's generative AI capabilities and AWS integrations at upcoming AWS Summit events. If you're attending, stop by and see CockroachDB in action.
