As re:Invent 2025 kicks off in Las Vegas, the energy is unmistakable. Developers, architects, and operators from across the globe are converging to talk about what’s next in cloud infrastructure, data, and AI. For Cockroach Labs and AWS, it’s been a year since we announced our Strategic Collaboration Agreement, and this is a moment to highlight how our partnership has grown. Today, we’re powering a new class of applications, from real-time genAI use-cases to scalable fintech platforms to globally resilient gaming experiences, ready to tackle the ever-changing landscape of tech advances.
CockroachDB is the cloud-native, PostgreSQL-compatible distributed SQL database built to thrive in the most demanding environments and to scale as applications demand. When deployed on AWS, it becomes even more powerful: combining elastic scale, local performance, and bulletproof resilience with the infrastructure trusted by the world’s largest enterprises.
Let’s take a look at how CockroachDB and AWS are building what's next, together.
Looking back: A year of genAI acceleration with AWS
2025 has been the year genAI moved from proof of concept to production, and we’ve been at the center of it. Together with AWS, we’ve helped teams rethink the way data flows into and out of genAI models, ensuring low-latency and always-consistent access to high-value data. CockroachDB gives builders the ability to create on top of a resilient, globally distributed database that can keep pace with the demands of AI-driven applications. And, companies can scale from pilot through production seamlessly without changing their data architecture, enabling them to move fast and not break things.
If you’re interested in seeing first-hand how to build genAI apps with CockroachDB and AWS, you can check out this technical session where we explored how to combine CockroachDB and AWS Bedrock to deliver scalable, vector-aware, genAI experiences without compromising performance or consistency.
This year, we also published a guide entitled, "Modernize and Scale for GenAI on AWS," which provides a blueprint for organizations to modernize their data infrastructure and support scalable, resilient genAI applications using CockroachDB on AWS. The guide explains why legacy databases fall short in modern AI scenarios and outlines the key drivers behind this shift: resilience, elastic scale, regulatory compliance, and AI-readiness. CockroachDB combines the consistency and familiarity of distributed SQL with support for vector data, enabling low-latency global access and powering genAI use cases like RAG, semantic search, and real-time recommendations. We offer a three-phase modernization framework (standardize, scale, diversify) and a reference architecture for deploying RAG applications, demonstrating how a unified, cloud-native database platform accelerates both modernization and AI adoption.
In addition, this year, we also co-hosted an immersive, hands-on event with AWS so customers could learn how to build genAI-ready applications. From RAGS to Resilient: Build Resilient GenAI Applications using CockroachDB covered everything from the CockroachDB fundamentals to the latest genAI enhancements and real-world customer experiences.
Why this matters: GenAI doesn’t just need scale — it needs resilience, flexibility, and accuracy. Together with AWS, CockroachDB delivers all this and more, allowing teams to modernize their data infrastructure, while ensuring your app never returns stale, missing, or inconsistent data, even as it scales globally.
Making moves with the finserv and gaming industries
Financial services: Resilient infrastructure for high-stakes data
Finserv teams demand strong consistency, compliance, and round-the-clock uptime. They’re building systems where even a moment of downtime or a single data discrepancy can cost millions. With CockroachDB on AWS, those teams get:
Multi-region scale with data domiciling to meet complex regulatory requirements
Serializably isolated transactions for data integrity, even across global deployments
Automated disaster recovery without complex failover logic
Whether it’s modernizing legacy core banking infrastructure or building fast, flexible payment systems, our customers, including top global banks, trust CockroachDB to deliver.
RELATED: Architecting Resilient Financial Systems with CockroachDB and AWS
This white paper explores how CockroachDB, deployed on AWS, enables financial institutions to modernize their infrastructure to meet the increasing demands of scale, resilience, and regulatory compliance. Traditional databases struggle with latency, planned- and unplanned-downtime, and inflexible deployments, creating critical risk in high-stakes financial environments. CockroachDB addresses these challenges with a distributed SQL architecture that supports multi-region deployments, active-active resilience, and data localization for global compliance. The paper outlines three architectural patterns: multi-active single cluster, active-passive multi-cluster, and active-active multi-cluster. Each is designed to meet varying business continuity and disaster recovery goals, allowing financial services firms to achieve near-zero downtime and withstand outages without service disruption or data loss.
Gaming: Always-on, real-time, and ready for anything
Last year at AWS re:Invent, we partnered with Hard Rock Digital, a top sports betting and interactive gaming platform, to showcase how they solved complex regulatory and data residency challenges in the U.S. sports betting market by deploying CockroachDB on AWS Outposts. From live multiplayer experiences to personalized user states and progression tracking, gaming platforms need to handle massive, unpredictable workloads with zero tolerance for downtime.
Facing state-by-state data sovereignty rules and high infrastructure costs, Hard Rock Digital turned to CockroachDB’s distributed SQL architecture to create a single, logical database that could be extended into specific jurisdictions using AWS Outposts. Data is kept in-jurisdiction to ensure compliance with local laws, while simplifying operations for the Hard Rock Digital team. This approach ensures compliance, reduces operational overhead, and supports high availability and low-latency performance for their multi-region betting platform.
With CockroachDB on AWS, gaming teams can:
Automatically scale horizontally to handle massive workloads without downtime
Leverage AWS integrations to deliver low-latency and highly personalized gaming experiences at scale
Comply with local data regulations while reducing latency regardless of where your users are around the world
