With RoachFest24 episodes 1 and 2 down, we are grateful for the wonderful turnout at Menlo Park and London. As we continue recapping RoachFest24 so far, we’re also looking forward to the final event with RoachFest NYC on September 26th.
This year, we were so grateful to the Netflix team for hitting the stage again after their tremendous premiere in 2022. Four years into their adoption of CockroachDB, Netflix’s team shared many learnings about the best optimizations and configurations that help their clients, internal Netflix developers, meet their goals. The pioneering streaming service has developed a mature platform providing databases-as-a-service to hundreds of Netflix developers and continues building out even more efficient strategies.
“How Netflix enables CockroachDB-as-a-service”
Senior Software Engineer, Shengwei Wang, and Software Engineer, Ram Srivatsa Kannan dazzled the crowd with their case for multi-region clusters. Along with their team, Wang and Kannan provide CockroachDB-as-a-Service (DBaaS) to customers, relieving the burden of managing the data storage layer. The team manages hundreds of clusters, including dozens of multi-region clusters, allowing customers to plug in to 2-4 multi-region clusters based on their tolerance for region failure.
Netflix first productionalized CockroachDB in 2020 and last spoke with the RoachFest audience in 2022 about their migration journey to CockroachDB. With their tenure as CockroachDB users, Wang and Kannan shared tips and learnings on how and when to best optimize their resources. They discuss follower reads, global tables, and geo-partitioning among other topics. Always keeping the customer in mind, the duo want to ensure that CockroachDB provides the flexibility that customers need in order to achieve their goals.
With over 380 clusters and 160 production clusters, Netflix’s Database Platform Team saw the benefits of multi-region clusters due to CockroachDB’s:
Region survivability
Performance tuning capabilities
Load balancing during traffic evacuation

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for September 26th. We’ll be returning with RoachFest24 NYC for the third year in a row. You won’t want to miss this incredible lineup of events–hear from experts and connect with fellow Cockroach users.
